As many of our readers know, “Doc” Holliday was a professional gambler who worked the saloon and gambling halls of the cattle and mining towns of the Western Frontier between 1873 and 1887. 1 What readers might not know was that Holliday also suffered from debilitating pain caused by chronic tuberculosis (TB) infection. 1-8 Doc Holliday arguably was the most intriguing and colorful. Summer wear might've played a big reason in why the legendary western personalities killed so many people.
The relationship of Doc Holliday and “Big Nose Kate” is well known. But when did it start? Many accounts say the pair met in Ft. Griffin, TX in the late 1870s. Holliday biographer Gary Roberts disagrees.
He says they got together when both were in St. Louis in the spring of 1872. Doc was practicing his profession of dentistry; Kate was practicing the much different profession of prostitution. It’s not clear just what happened, but sparks must have flown. They were together, off and on, until Holliday headed for Colorado after the Vendetta Ride.

John Henry “Doc” Holliday’s reputation as the “deadly dentist” is greatly exaggerated. One account stated he won “more than thirty duels to the death;” another claimed he “killed at least sixteen men.” Holliday biographer Dr. Gary Roberts says Holliday killed only two: Tom McLaury, in the Tombstone, Arizona, street fight in 1881, and Mike Gordon, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1879. Holliday participated in other shooting scrapes, but nobody died.
